When Does Lavender Bloom In Maui

Lavender is a vibrantly-colored, aromatic purple plant that is said to help treat insomnia, improve calmness, reduce pain, blood pressure, and more.

Although not native to the region, the lavender plant has become well-acclimated to the mountain slopes of Maui.

Each year, tourists travel from near and far to see the Maui lavender plants during their peak blooming season.

When Does The Lavender Bloom In Maui?

To truly see the blooms at their peak, may require some strategic planning and timing.

The largest lavender fields typically bloom in mid-summer. The bulk of the blooms for the lavender species that make up these fields typically bloom in June through August and sometimes in early September.

However, because of the soil and ideal climate in Maui, there are certain varieties of lavender that bloom year-round, such as Spanish Lavender.

Each of the different species of lavender boasts its own unique appearance, characteristics, and scents.

Many previous visitors recommend calling the farm you plan on visiting prior to your trip to see what species of lavender you will be able to catch in bloom at that time.

True Lavender

The True Lavender species—also known as English Lavender—typically blooms up to two times in June and July.

However, at Maui’s most popular lavender farm, Ali’i Kula, the season is often prolonged into August and September.

There they regularly harvest blooms individually, which allows new buds to mature longer into the year.

True Lavender is known for producing most lavender essential oils. Its unmistakable fragrance can be smelled in the air as soon as you’re near a bloom.

The plant boasts hearty, vibrant purple blooms that are part of what makes peak blooming season so well-known.

French Lavender

The French Lavender species is typically the most active type of lavender year-round in Maui.

It is a beautiful plant that is often used as seasoning in a variety of dishes.

Spanish Lavender

Spanish Lavender is known for its beautiful, colorful blooms in shades of purple, pinks, maroons, and whites.

In Maui, Spanish Lavender blooms throughout the year.

This species is not usually used for cooking or essential oils. It’s mostly used for ornamental purposes.
